The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a regional unit with an active research profile, currently involved in two European projects, NEOBRAIN (mechanisms for brain damage in preterm infants) and NeoOpioid (safety and PUMA for morphine and fentanyl). The partner at Uppsala Universitet provides expertise in neonatal EEG-monitoring, and has vast experience with the antiepileptic medication lignocaine. The department of clinical neurophysiology provides sophisticated EEG and EEG-monitoring techniques.
The Department of Clinical Neurophysiology is a technically advanced unit, headed by Dr Roland Flink, with a special interest for epilepsy and epilepsy surgery. Dr Lena Hellström-Westas is a pioneer within the field of continuous monitoring with amplitude-integrated EEG (aEEG), and has investigated clinical effects and pharmacokinetics of lidocaine. Professor Uwe Ewald is the clinical director of the NICU in Uppsala, with a broad experience of neonatal research. Dr Johan Ågren is a neurologically oriented neonatologist with expertise in water balance. He spent his postdoc at Johns Hopkins studying aquaporins at the laboratory of the Nobel prize winner professor Agre.
