Institute Presentation

The Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, UMCU (University Medical Centre, Utrecht), is one of the well established children's hospital in the Netherlands with a large level III perinatal centre with a longstanding specific interest in perinatal brain injury. The unit has a longstanding experience in neonatal neuro-imaging, both ultrasound and MRI and was the first unit to introduce continuous aEEG monitoring in the Netherlands in 1992.

Together with Lena Hellström-Westas and Ingmar Rosen, Linda de Vries has written the first `atlas of amplitude-integrated EEGs in the newborn`(ref 1). The neonatal unit in Utrecht has been setting national guidelines for the treatment of neonatal seizures. They were the first to start a multicentre study randomising neonates for treatment of subclinical seizures (SuSeQue).

Linda de Vries and Mona Toet have been teaching at the International Brain Monitoring Conference, which started 4 years ago and are also part of the scientific committee of this meeting. They are partners of the European NeoBrain EU project, and will together with Lena Hellström-Westas analyse all the aEEG data collected for this project.

The unit has an international reputation with an extensive output of publications (ref 2-4).
Linda de Vries has a national and international reputation in the field of aEEG and treatment of neonatal seizures and has extensive experience in antiepileptic drug studies in neonates (ref 5). There are working closely together with the department of neurophysiology (prof dr. A.C. van Huffelen).
Mona Toet is well known in the field of neonatal aEEG and Floris Groenendaal is part of the neonatal neurology team and an expert in neonatal MRI.
The unit has a well-established follow-up clinic and has studied several cohorts of infants into early and late childhood.
