Institute Presentation

The Erasmus Medical Center is the largest medical center in the Netherlands. It has a longstanding history of basic, translational and clinical research. In 2009, the Erasmus Medical Center ranked first of all European institutions with regard to clinical research. The annual turnover exceeds 900 million Euro's and the Erasmus MC has scientific collaborations with all top institutes around the world.

The Sophia Children's Hospital is a separate Hospital within the Erasmus Medical Center with it's own laboratories and it's own MRI magnet at 1.5 T.  All neonatal treatment modalities are available including ECMO and neonatal surgery. It serves a large part of the Netherlands with an adherence of over 4 million people. All neonates born with severe perinatal asphyxia in this region are treated here. Therapeutic hypothermia and continuous 24h-full-channel-EEG monitoring are well established methods. The special scientific interest of the neonatal department has been neonatal neurology and neonatal imaging for many years.
